Farmers can't emerge as they are poorly resourced. This was a clear message echoed at Saam Trek, Saamwerk workshop held at Ganspan Pan outside Jan Kemp Dorp.The purpose of the workshop was to equip farmers to be able to farm professionally and profitably. It also seeks to share and encourage farmers to work together and support each other. Various topics such as feedlots and Job fund were discussed. Farmers were encouraged about the significance of feedlot and how it will boost their business. Feedlot is where you keep your livestock and are fed for about three months with the sole purpose of fattened them up. Saamtrek Samwerk chairperson Mr Sehularo Sehularo outline that farming is business therefore all hands must be on deck. Mr Sehularo, however accept that land is still a huge challenge for farmers.
Challenges facing farmers:
- Water sewage affecting livestock
- Stock theft
- Infrastructure stealing such as fences.
- Trespassing due to stealing of Infrastructure.
- Ilegal occupation of land and shack erections.
Meanwhile Acting Francis Baard Deputy Director, Ms Tumi Mokgothu shared a brief about the purpose of Job fund and encouraged those who qualify to submit their applications before the closing date. Ms Mokgothu challenge farmers that don't qualify not to despair but encouraged to work together with the Departmental officials for them to qualify. One farmer shared how backyard feedlot improved his livestock and managed to boast his pockets.
