The Department's Gender Unit embarked on a week long outreach programme in Frances Baard, John Taolo Gaetsewe and ZF Mgcawu District. The purpose of the visit was to empower and capacitate Rural women, youth and people with disabilities on issues affecting them, such as women and children abuse, drug and alcohol abuse. The Department through it's Gender Unit donated various items such as food hampers, starter-packs including seeds, dust bins, refuse bags, hygiene packs and stationary.
The kind gesture by the Department is part of celebrating Human Rights Month in the country which is being commemorated annually country wide. The Human Rights Day was commemorated on the 21st of March to remember those who where martyred during the struggle. It also seeks to reassure everyone that the Freedom we enjoy today came at a price - and should at all cost be save guarded. About six Centre’s benefitted through this warm gesture - namely- Kgomotsego Old age Centre in Batlharos, Goitsimodimo Empowerment Center (Safehouse for Abused Women) in Bankhara, Oasis Skills Development Special School, Thuthuzela Care Centre in Galeshewe, Rich One Teach One Special Care Centre in Bakley West and Joy Centre Special School in Danielskuil.
At the Bankhara Centre for the Abused Women and Children was a young victim from Oliphantshoek who through the police intervention was hooked to drugs - now she is optimistic that the Centre will come to her rescue as she sees a light at the end of a tunnel. Joy, happiness and jubilation was shown all over the faces of the Centre’s management as they just ran short of words for what the Department has done.
