The Department’s Veterinary Services vaccinated 116 dogs and 15 cats for rabies in Lorriesfontein in the Namakwa District.
Rabies is a zoonotic disease (transmitted from animals to humans) that can affect all mammals. The disease affects the brain causing death in both people and animals. People most commonly get the disease from being bitten by a dog or a cat that has the disease. The vaccination campaign of 116 dogs and 15 cats in the area by the Department is part of the Government's efforts to take veterinary service to the people in the far flung areas of the province.
