The Department together with the Department of Health brought young and old together in Platfontein to capacitate them about the importance of food gardens and healthy diet. The workshop focused on aspects such as health and nutrition facilitated by Mrs Nadia Potgieter while the Department tackled vegetable production.
Department's Extension Practitioner, Ms Tsholofelo Tongwane, conducted a situation analysis on the community and identified a need for food security, as many of the households rely on government grants to sustain their livelihoods. She emphasised the importance of food gardens to both the clinic and the community. Ms Tongwane together with community planted spinach, union, carrots, beetroot at the Platfontein Clinic. The establishment of the vegetable garden at household levels can help vulnerable families to have access to food which will in turn assist in improving their health. Part of the department's mandate is to make sure that the communities are food secured. Mrs Potgieter conducts home visits on a regular basis in Platfontein and indicated a serious need for food security in this community. The establishment of this gardens will thus ensure that vulnerable families have access to food on the table.
