Provincial Veterinary Laboratory (NCPVL)
The Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs , Rural Development and Land Reform’s Provincial Veterinary Laboratory (NCPVL) renders diagnostic, laboratory and investigative services including epidemiological studies that generate data to support the control of animal diseases.
Laboratory is an accredited facility since 2017, which boasts of 5 accredited test methods, namely;
- Sheep scab identification,
- Anthrax,
- Campylobacter fetus,
- Trichomonas fetus ,
- Brucella abortus screening.
NCPVL has been confirmed as a member of the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).
The South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) is the regulatory body for the Veterinary and para-veterinary professions in South Africa and has a statutory duty to determine scientific and ethical standards of professional conduct and education. It also advances public and animal health through quality veterinary services for all. Source: savc.org.za
This means that the NCPVL facility is a member of the council and therefore subjected to be inspected within a six-year cycle. By virtue of being a member - there will be a random selection of 250 facilities within the country that will be inspected each year. Furthermore, the facility must inform the council of any change of physical address with immediate effect.
Currently, the laboratory is one of the two government laboratories in the country, which is using the laboratory information management system(LIMS) which allows notification of clients on receipt of their samples ,generation of test reports and charge manager software that has resulted in improved revenue collection and turnaround time for the delivery of invoices to customers.
