MEDIA STATEMENT : RECENT RAINS TO EASE DROUGHT BURDEN ON
OUR FARMERS

The Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform welcomes the good rains that have poured recently. The rains came in handy as it will ease the burden on our farmers who were feeling the scotching heat of drought and veldfires due to lack of rain.

The Department is optimistic that it will bring a sigh of relief to our commercial and smallholder farmers. It is noting with concern the dryness of the veld due to lack of rain in the past months – it’s hopeful that it will pour again and put more smiles on both crop and livestock farmers.

The dryness of the vegetation due to lack of rain creates the perfect condition for runaway veld fires. Veld fires pose a serious threat to both agriculture and human beings – hence we are satisfied for what we have received. We are hopeful that the heavens will open again and decrease the current heat that contributes to veldfires and drought.

Currently, farmers in some parts of the country are still counting some loss due to veldfires and drought, hence the recent rains came in handy. END
